As you know, I often talk about new trends leading to the future of automotive.

This time I would like to tell you about new key trends in automotive while getting closer to the new year.  As you can imagine, the work continues endlessly towards digitalization. Let’s briefly describe these 5 key trends:

Acceleration in production of cars using electric power: Automakers will increase the diversity of Hybrid, Plug-in hybrid and Battery-only electric cars to comply with aggressive CAFE ( Corporate Average Fuel Economy ) standards to be implemented in 2025. Many new models will hit the market in 2020. The Tesla Model Y, a crossover on the Tesla 3 platform, will be available in 2020. The Mini Electric, which shares advanced technology with BMW i3, takes to the roads next year  as well as the VW ID series powered by only electric.
Growth in Start-up car companies: The automotive brands of the future won’t just be known brands. Many new automotive companies are trying to repeat Tesla’s evolution since it was born in 2004. For Example, Californian Rivian  acquired $ 700 million funding from Amazon earlier this year. It will compete with Tesla by bringing the fully electric-powered R1T truck to market in late 2020.
New and improved digital platforms : To meet the complex technology demands in today’s cars, manufacturers are investing heavily in digital platforms.  Significant developments in BMW and GM products are striking. The new digital platform to be used in these products will be able to process 4.5 terabytes of data per hour. This value means five times the data processing capacity in the electronic systems of cars manufactured today. In the same time Over-the-air ( OTA ) data transfer can also be utilised.
Extended 3rd level automation : We are moving rapidly towards the era of fully autonomous cars. With the 3rd level automation, under certain conditions cars will be able to move independently of driver control. For example, cars can independently brake or accelerate under certain environmental conditions. For example Audi Traffic Jam Pilot, Cadillac Super Cruise, Mercedes Drive Pilot systems can take over driver control in certain cases. Starting in 2020, we will be able to see these systems in many new model cars.
Increased use of carbon Fiber in car production : Car manufacturers are expanding the use of carbon fiber both interior and exterior architecture of each vehicle to reduce the weight. For example, Volvo Polestar 1 Plug-in hybrid and Polestar 2 EV  consists of carbon fiber as the basic material in the interior architecture thus the rigidity increases while the vehicles become lighter. Likewise, GM Sierra pick-up’ s platform  was switched to the use of composite carbon fiber. The automotive industry is expected to increase carbon fiber use by 7.9% to 10.6% depending on vehicle models over the next 5 years.
